If you know me, you have most likely heard me draw to attention the fact that we are all only here for a certain amount of time. And I don’t really beat around the bush- I often talk about the fact that we are all going to die. My point is for us to stop waiting for what we really desire in life and to start creating the life we want to live while we are here. This is something that I have built my work around- helping others to find more peace, meaning, and fulfillment in life.
There are several steps involved in creating the life we really want. These steps are not necessarily linear; they can be circular and zig-zaggy and back and forth and piled on top of each other. We must start by, at the very least, asking for what we want.
1. Ask the universe for what you want. This may be through prayer, journaling, affirmations, speaking your request, free writing, chanting, meditation, or any technique that allows what you want to be released out into the universe. The intention must be put out there to be energized and brought from the subtle realm of an idea to the gross state of concrete reality.
Asking can also come in the form of practicing gratitude for what you have and for what you want as if you already have it. This is a powerful way to focus energy and intention toward your desire.
Years ago, I used to say out loud, “One of these days, I will have a job where I can do yoga and counseling together.” And then I randomly stumbled upon a ‘private’ job listing for my license, looked up the company by the email address and found that it was exactly what I had been speaking about. From there, when the time felt right, I began saying, “I am going to move into therapeutic yoga full time and counseling part-time.” This transition felt much bumpier and much more out of control, but it happened. And in the past year, I have been talking about the transition that is now occurring in my career. I never really questioned that these things would happen. I spoke about them like I already knew it would happen, I just didn’t know how. This part is important to note- we don’t have to know the HOW, we just have to know the WHAT and the universe will take care of the how. We often get so stuck trying to figure out the how, that we get paralyzed in our tracks, but the good news is that the HOW of it all is the universe’s responsibility, not ours.
2. Listen to what the universe tells you and look for signs, opportunities, and messages everywhere. I have heard it said that praying is our time of talking to God and meditation is our time of listening. We all know that I recommend meditation, of any sort, for everyone. Taking time to tune in to ourselves and to the universe will connect us with the energy to bring about our request. It is also very important to live with our eyes, minds, and hearts open to what “answers” present themselves to us in every day life.
We may hear the same message over and over from different sources or be directed to the same resource more than once. We may have the same feeling in our body or longing to make a change. We may have an outright offer to get exactly what we want.
Sometimes people come into our lives for only a brief time with the karmic intention of connecting us with other people or shifting us in a different direction. We may not understand why at the time, but being able to look back and realize that the purpose for that person was to lead us to something else is pretty spectacular. When we have that gut feeling of needing to explore an opportunity, we must honor that. Our gut is much wiser than our brain, so we mustn’t let thinking get in the way of feeling what is right.
3. Open yourself to be redirected, to change, to give up the things that are keeping you where you are. Sometimes we have to be willing to give up the things that are keeping us stuck and that usually isn’t very comfortable. While asking and working toward change, we must take a look at what we may need to let go of to free ourselves up for what is to come.
We often get in our own way and make things more difficult than needed. We also often assume that the answer to our complex issue is a complex answer, but more often than not, the answer is very simple. When we can recognize our own patterns and let go of relationships that are not supporting our change, habits that are creating roadblocks, and the old beliefs that are keeping us in a state of contraction, we can lean into expansion. Growth does not occur in a state of contraction or holding on.

4. Take action toward what you are asking for. After all of the other steps, we have to do our part. Frequently, I have heard people say that they have set their intention and put it out into the universe, but then they are just sitting and waiting for it to drop into their laps. We must start living “as if“…start behaving like we know for sure that it is coming and prepare the way so that when it shows up, we can step right into it and keep on going with a smile on our face.
The parable of the guy in a flood praying for God to save him comes to mind here. A truck comes by, boat comes by, a helicopter comes by, and the guy turns them all down saying that God will save him. When he dies, he asks God why he didn’t save him and God replied that he sent a truck, a boat, and a helicopter to save him and asked what else he could have done for him. Don’t be the flood guy! Ask, Listen and Look, and then Act!
5. Repeat these steps and say thank you to the universe!
*WARNING: If we ask, we just might get it! The universe is listening and when we ask for change, we have to ready ourselves for it to come. (Sometimes I have to remind myself of this part too.)
Believe in the good things that are coming. Be bold and ask. I will be asking right along with you. And when things shake up and come to you, I will be there for that too.
