Life throws curveballs. Change is inevitable. Yet, we often resist it, clinging to the familiar even when it no longer serves us. This resistance, this rigidity, creates unnecessary suffering.
Adaptability, on the other hand, is our superpower. It’s the ability to adjust to new conditions and challenges with grace and resilience. It allows us to flow with the inevitable changes of life, to see them as opportunities for growth and transformation.
The High Cost of Rigidity
When we experience ongoing stress or trauma, our system can become more rigid as a protective response. This rigidity can manifest in several ways:
- Closed-mindedness: We become resistant to new ideas and perspectives.
- Fixed thinking patterns: We get stuck in our ways of thinking, unable to see alternative solutions.
- Emotional suppression: We avoid or deny uncomfortable emotions, leading to emotional dysregulation.
- Unhelpful behavioral patterns: We cling to unproductive habits and routines.
Rigidity traps us, keeping us stuck in a place of limitation and unhappiness. It prevents us from reaching our full potential and experiencing the richness that life has to offer.

Cultivating Adaptability: Your Path to Growth
The good news is that adaptability is a skill we can all develop. Here are some practices to help you become more adaptable:
- Shift your perspective: Reframe challenges as adventures and opportunities. This positive outlook will help you approach difficulties with a more open mind and creative spirit.
- Embrace movement: When you feel stuck, move your body. Simple movements like the six functional movements of the spine can help to release tension and bring your nervous system back into balance.
- Practice improv: Improv teaches the art of “Yes, and…” This means accepting what is happening and building on it. It’s a powerful tool for letting go of resistance and embracing the flow of life.
- Take action: When you feel stuck, don’t overthink it. Take one small step forward, even if it feels insignificant. Movement is key to breaking free from rigidity.
By incorporating these practices into your life, you can cultivate greater adaptability. You’ll become more flexible in your thinking, more resilient in the face of challenges, and more open to the endless possibilities that life has to offer.
Remember, adaptability is not about giving up control. It’s about surrendering to the reality that change is constant and developing the capacity to navigate it with grace and strength.
As always, I will be practicing right along with you.
